Winter sports have gotten underway and another option for young children is being offered by the Portage Curling Club. Rae Trimble-Olson, the Office Manager for the club, describes what the club is putting on.
"Little Rockers is a learn-to-curl option for kids in kindergarten to Grade 5. After Grade 5, generally they can play at the middle years intramural level with the schools, so we offer learn to curl for those earlier years."
Trimble-Olson adds that encouraging kids to try the sport has seen several young curlers continue on to higher levels.
"It's just a way to introduce kids to curling and give them some proper instruction on how to curl and hopefully they'll continue on," she continues. "We do see some of the kids in the junior high and high school and perhaps even further on that have taken the little rockers. So, that's always good to see to keep the sport going."
She comments that if the program involves some dedicated people who give of their time to run the program.
"It's volunteer teachers. Some are board members, some are club members, some of which have their kids in the Little Rockers program. So, they teach because they're here anyways. Last year, some of the high school curlers volunteered to do some teaching. They had actually three that helped out last year actually had taken Little Rockers when they were that age."
The program runs on Thursdays at 4 p.m. each week. It is a ten-week course, and you can reach out to get involved by calling the club office, open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
