A Sunday morning incident in Winkler involving a man assaulting an individual, threatening a neighbour and barricading himself in a room in his home ended safely according to police.
Winkler Police Service has released more details on the situation which began shortly after 9:00 a.m. when officers were called to a home on Southgate Drive. In a news release issued by the department to PembinaValleyOnline, a family member reported a 45-year-old male resident of the address had assaulted another person inside the home and had also threatened a neighbour.
“When police arrived, the male had barricaded himself in a room in the basement with weapons,” noted the release. “The Regional Support Tactical Team secured a perimeter around the residence, and neighbours in adjacent homes were asked to leave for safety.”
The Regional Crisis Negotiation Unit was able to have a brief contact with the male by telephone, however, continued conversation was not possible. After several more attempts to make contact, the Regional Support Tactical Team entered the home and safely removed the male.
He has been charged with Assault, Assault with a Weapon, Utter Threats x 2, Resist Arrest, and Possess a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose.
The Winkler Fire Department and EMS from Boundary Trails Health Centre also assisted with the call.
