The Portage Terriers have joined the Steinbach Pistons and Dauphin Kings in the Canadian Junior Hockey League's Top 20 Rankings. The Pistons (14-2-1) moved up one spot from seven to six. The Kings (13-4-1) remain at number 12 while the Portage Terriers are 17. The Central Canada Hockey League's Rockland Nationals (16-1-1) remain the number one ranked team in the country.
The Brandon Wheat Kings seven-game points streak came to an end Monday afternoon at Westoba Place. Koen Cleaver made 35 saves as the Lethbridge Hurricanes blanked Brandon 3-0. Wheat Kings netminder Connor Bjarnason stopped 30 shots.
The Winnipeg Jets begin a three-game road trip tonight (6 p.m.) when they meet the New York Rangers. The Jets have set an NHL record winning 14 of their first 15 games to start a season. Winnipeg goaltender Connor Hellebuyck has been named the NHL's First Star of the Week for the week ending November 10th. Hellebuyck, 31, began the week with a 21-save shutout in a 3-0 win over Utah on Tuesday. On Thursday, the reigning Vezina Trophy winner stopped all 35 shots in Winnipeg’s 1-0 victory over Colorado to earn the 40th shutout of his career. He also posted consecutive shutouts for the first time in his NHL career. Finally, Hellebuyck stopped 32-of-33 shots in Sunday’s 4-1 win over the Dallas Stars. In that game, he also set the franchise record for the longest shutout streak (191:47). Hellebuyck finished the week a perfect 3- 0-0 with a pair of shutouts, a 0.33 goals-against average and a .989 save percentage.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Toronto Argonauts arrived in Vancouver on Monday. The Bombers and Argos will meet in the 111th Grey Cup this Sunday at BC Place. The two head coaches, Winnipeg's Mike O'Shea and Ryan Dinwiddie of Toronto, will address the media this morning. The Blue Bombers first practice session of Grey Cup week begins at 12:50 p.m.
