The Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) recently held elections for their presidency.
They held the election at the organization's annual Fall Convention, and they elected Lara Westerlund as their new president.
Westerlund has served as Vice President for the organization since 2017, which has given her extensive experience in the role, on top of her strong commitment to advocating for rural municipalities in Alberta.
In her role as the new president, Westerlund will continue to advance RMA's vision of strengthening rural Alberta through advocacy, as well as ensuring that rural voices are heard and addressed.
Westerlund took over the presidency from Paul McLauchlin, who was the president since 2020.
"I’m truly excited to step into this position and guide the RMA forward. We have important work to do, but together, we are ready to tackle the challenges ahead. The solutions are here within our board, among rural elected officials, our administration, and the dedicated team at the RMA and their group of companies. By working together, we will move those solutions forward and make a meaningful impact for rural Alberta," stated Westerlund in a media release.
Due to the results of the election, and the conclusion of current terms, the RMA also held elections for three of their Districts, including Districts 1,3, and 4.
As a result of the elections to fill those spots, Jason Schneider from Vulcan County has been elected as District 1 Director, who is also a Reeve with Vulcan County.
The RMA has been around since 1909 and is committed to empowering rural municipalities through strong, effective local governance.
Their goal is to help strengthen and support rural Alberta through advocacy and business services, and this current group of members will continue to promote sustainable growth, as well as support effective local governance.
