Steinbach Regional varsity boys will face the Glenlawn Lions and the SRSS varsity girls will meet the College Jeanne-Sauve Olympiens in the South Central Athletic Conference High School Volleyball AAAA finals Friday night at College Jeanne-Sauve in Winnipeg. Both Sabres teams defeated the Dakota Lancers in four sets Wednesday night in the semifinals at the SRSS. The varsity boys beat Dakota 17-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-19. The varsity girls defeated the Lancers 25-20, 25-21, 25-27, 25-14. Steinbach Regional will take on the Olympiens tonight in the junior varsity boys final at College Jeanne-Sauve.
Steinbach Regional gave up four unanswered second period goals and dropped a 7-3 decision to the Oak Park Raiders at the T.G. Smith Arena. Peyton Froese had a pair of goals for the Sabres while the other went to Daniel Zuev. Trae Fast started the game in net for the SRSS. He allowed five goals on 20 shots and was pulled after the second period. Kash Armour played the final 20 minutes and gave up two goals on 11 shots. The Sabres have a 3-3 record in the Winnipeg High School Hockey League's Platinum Promotions Division.
The Winnipeg Jets play their second of a three-game road trip tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Jets became the fastest team to 15 wins in NHL history thanks to Tuesdays 6-3 victory over the New York Rangers.
Elias Salomonsson had two goals and an assist and Nikita Chibrikov potted the shootout winner as the Manitoba Moose snapped their four-game losing skid with a 5-4 victory over the Milwaukee Admirals 5-4. Manitoba goaltender Thomas Milic made 27 saves in regulation and overtime and then stopped all three shots he faced in the shootout.
The CFL Awards will be handed out tonight in Vancouver. Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back Brady Oliveira is the West Division finalist for the Most Outstanding Player Award and Most Outstanding Canadian. Oliveira led the league in rushing yards (1,353) for the second year in a row becoming the first player to accomplish the feat since Andrew Harris from 2017-2019. He also led the CFL in yards from scrimmage (1,829). Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and Montreal Alouettes defensive lineman Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund are the East Division finalists for Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian.
Toronto's city council has approved a new FIFA World Cup charge, aimed at helping ease the burden of hosting the pricey sporting event. Council members voted to raise the tax applied to hotels and short-term rentals from six per cent to 8.5 per cent. The tax will run from June 1st, 2025, to July 31st, 2026. Toronto has estimated hosting its piece of the expanded 48-team soccer showcase will cost 380-million-dollars, an increase of 80-million-dollars compared to a 2022 forecast.
