The federal government has introduced measures to help ease household expenses and provide financial relief to Canadians dealing with inflation and rising living costs. Starting December 14, a temporary Goods and Services Tax/Harmonized Sales Tax (GST/HST) exemption will apply to various essential goods.
But what does this mean for Airdrie families? Here’s a look at which items they can purchase locally that will be covered by the exemption. The following goods will qualify for the temporary GST/HST exemption:
- Children’s clothing: Garments designed for babies and children up to specific sizes (girls size 16 or boys size 20), including socks, hats, gloves, and other accessories.
- Children’s footwear: Footwear for babies or children with an insole length of 24.25 centimetres or less.
- Children’s diapers: Diapers, training pants, inserts, or rubber pants designed for use by children.
- Children’s car seats: Booster or restraint systems meeting Canadian safety standards.
- Print newspapers: Regularly published newspapers (excluding digital publications, fliers, or most periodicals).
- Printed books: Physical books, including religious texts and audio recordings, excluding certain materials like catalogues or magazines.
- Christmas trees: Both natural and artificial trees.
- Food and beverages: This includes most grocery items, prepared foods (e.g., sandwiches, salads), snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, alcoholic beverages with up to 7 percent ABV, and more.
- Children’s toys: Toys for children under 14, including board games, dolls, construction toys like Lego, and video-game consoles.
- Jigsaw puzzles: For all ages.
This exemption, which will be in place until February 15, 2025
How much could Airdrie families save?
According to the government, a family spending approximately $2,000 on qualifying items, such as children’s clothing, shoes, snacks, books, and meals, could save up to $100 on grocery and holiday shopping.
In provinces with the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), such as Ontario and Nova Scotia, the savings would be even greater, with some families potentially saving as much as $260.
Working Canadians Rebate to provide additional relief
In addition to the GST/HST tax break, the government is introducing a new Working Canadians Rebate, providing an additional $250 to those who worked in 2023 and earned up to $150,000. This rebate, delivered in early spring 2025, will benefit 18.7 million Canadians, including many local workers in Airdrie.
Eligible Canadians must have filed their 2023 tax return by December 31, 2024, and meet specific criteria, such as claiming the Canada Pension Plan or Employment Insurance credits.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized that while the government cannot control the prices at the checkout, these measures will help Canadians have more money in their pockets, making life more affordable.
"With a tax break for all Canadians and the Working Canadians Rebate, we’re making sure you can buy the things you need and save for the things you want," said Trudeau.
