The Weyburn Humane Society is facing another major challenge after a burst pipe caused significant damage to its facility. The incident, which happened just days after the new drywall was installed, forced the shelter to close while repairs were being made temporarily.

“This wall was just finished on Sunday, and now it’s pretty much ruined,” said Colleen Morrice, shelter manager at the Weyburn Humane Society.

The burst pipe affected the dog room, though the cat room was spared. However, with water shut off to the building, essential tasks such as cleaning and providing water for the animals have become difficult. Morrice described the situation as a recurring problem, as it was the fourth pipe to burst in the past two years. Morrice noted that she would pick up bottled water so the animals could still have some drinking water while the water was shut off.

Staff have been working tirelessly to clean up the damage. Morrice said she spent over an hour using a squeegee to remove water, noting that much of the flooding was near a drain, which helped minimize the spread. Despite this, the shelter remains concerned about long-term issues like mould, which could endanger the animals' health.

“It is very hard,” Morrice said. “We worry about mould in the walls, and these fragile little animals are usually sick when they come in. Mould is the last thing they need.”

Although the shelter is temporarily closed, Morrice emphasized that donations are needed and appreciated. Items like dog and cat food, treats, and toys will help keep the animals comfortable while repairs are underway.

“The dogs will be outside longer while I clean up, so any chews or toys to keep them busy would be great."
