Winnipeg Police have provided an update on a collision that caused a significant train derailment yesterday afternoon on the East Perimeter Highway.

On November 22, 2024, at approximately 3:09 p.m., emergency crews responded to a crash at the East Perimeter Highway and Fermor Avenue. The Winnipeg Police Service says that a semi-truck left the Perimeter overpass, striking a CN train below and derailing several cars.

The WPS says that the 56-year-old truck driver was airlifted to hospital by STARS Air Ambulance in unstable condition but is now in stable condition with serious injuries.

There were no reported injuries of anyone on the train crew

The WPS had urged motorists to avoid the East Perimeter Highway and Highway 1 "at all costs" on Friday afternoon.

The East Perimeter was closed in all directions at the overpass for approximately eight hours while crews responded at the scene.

The highway was reopened later Saturday evening, just after 11 p.m.

The WPS Traffic Division continues to investigate and is seeking witnesses or dashcam footage. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Traffic Division at 204-986-7085 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS or winnipegcrimestoppers.org.
