Lampman Community Theatre is set to delight audiences once again with their latest production, Road Trip to Dunedin, a two-act comedy written by Maureen Ulrich. This marks the theatre’s 17th production in 27 years, continuing its tradition of showcasing local talent and bringing the community together.

The play follows the journey of five women on a chaotic trip to Dunedin, Florida, for Toronto Blue Jays Spring Training. Packed with humour, family drama, and some unexpected wildlife encounters, the story offers something for everyone. “They don’t have to be a baseball fan to enjoy the play,” says Ulrich. “There’s a cockroach in the Airbnb, alligators in the Everglades, and maybe even a rocket launch at Cocoa Beach.”

The inspiration for the play comes directly from Ulrich’s own experiences. “I’ve been to spring training in Dunedin three times, and we’re heading back for a fourth time in February,” she shared. “It’s beautiful, and every day at 1:00, there’s a Blue Jays game. What could be wrong with that?”

The cast features performers from Lampman and the surrounding area, including Tamara Franklin and James Dobos from Estevan, and Stephanie Dayman, who travels to rehearsals with her infant in tow. “Emma-lyn just goes from lap to lap during rehearsals,” Ulrich laughed. Preparation has included everything from memorizing lines to sourcing Blue Jays paraphernalia, with some cast members stepping outside their comfort zones. “One actor, who’s been with us for five years, surprised us by singing for the first time instead of lip-syncing. It’s exciting!”

Balancing comedy with heartfelt family dynamics, Road Trip to Dunedin offers both laughter and depth. Ulrich credits the influence of Steel Magnolias for teaching her how to blend dramatic moments with levity. “We do that through the character of Mabel, an 80-something grandmother who’s witty but tough,” Ulrich explained.

For Ulrich, the production is about more than laughs. “I hope people come with a real appreciation of the risks these performers take on stage,” she said. “Every year, I ask community members to join, and many say, ‘Oh no, I like to watch but not perform.’ It takes courage, and it’s all in support of our Royal Canadian Legion in Lampman, which is so important.”

Road Trip to Dunedin runs December 5–7 at the Lampman Community Theatre. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors, available on Eventbrite.ca or by contacting Ulrich directly at 306-487-7512. A separate chicken supper will be served before the December 7 performance at an additional cost.
