The Winkler Christmas Cheerboard is making strides in supporting the community during the holiday season, and Sandra Banman, a member of the board, is at the forefront of these efforts.
Having rejoined the board last year after an earlier eight-year stint, Banman highlighted the rewarding experience of working alongside passionate board members. “There are so many gifts and talents among the team, and everyone has a deep compassion for the community,” she said. “It’s been incredible to be part of this journey.”
Moving to online applications
A significant change for the Cheerboard has been the transition to online applications, which began two years ago. While some miss the personal touch of in-person application submissions, Banman emphasized the benefits of the new system.
“Online applications reduce errors, prevent duplicates, and make it easier to track references and geographic data,” she explained. To support those who might struggle with technology, the board has been assisting applicants at Central Station throughout November. “We’ve been there every Wednesday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, helping people fill out their applications,” she said, noting that tomorrow marks the final day of this in-person support initiative.
Encouraging those in need to apply
For individuals hesitant to apply, Banman’s message is clear: “Don’t be afraid to reach out. Maybe this year has been tough, and you didn’t need help before or won’t need it next year. Let us assist you now.” She advised applicants to have a reference ready, such as a school liaison, pastor, or social worker, and reassured those feeling embarrassed that phone applications are also available. “You can email winklercheerboard@gmail.com to request a call,” Banman shared.
Application deadline and next steps
The deadline for applications is fast approaching at the end of this week (November 30). Applicants will receive confirmation emails once their submissions are reviewed. “We also verify references to ensure eligibility,” Banman noted, adding that those outside the board’s catchment area are directed to alternative resources.
Gratitude to the community
Banman expressed heartfelt thanks to the community for their unwavering support. “Your generosity comes in many forms—financial donations, food vouchers, fundraisers. It’s inspiring and means so much to those in need,” she said. “The recipients of these hampers are deeply grateful, and your kindness is truly life-giving.”
As the Winkler Christmas Cheerboard continues its mission, they hope the community’s spirit of giving ensure that no family is left behind during the festive season.
