Get set for an evening of poetry and music at St. Peter’s College as the Library welcomes poet and musical performer Tara Dawn Solheim. Her blend of work crosses genres and melds the spoken word with music and movement for a unique performance.
She’ll be at the College on Thursday, November 28 at 7:00 pm.
“I am very interested in music as well as written word,” Solheim reveals. “My mother was a music teacher, so I studied piano from the age of three. Now I usually use music in my performances as acapella singing, so I’ll be doing some of that on Thursday as well as reading some of my poetry.”
The complement of poetry and its innate musicality is a great mixture for the solo voice. Solheim feels that the music allows a slower tempo at times to help the listener connect with the audible poem.
As a poet, she’s been working on her craft since the age of 15 or so. Her studies at USask allowed her to cross paths with Governor General Award-winning poet Tim Lilburn, a favourite instructor during his time at St. Peter’s College. Lilburn helped steer Solheim to the complex possibilities of spoken word, along with his encouragement that was formative in her career.
“Poetry has always been important to me in taking time to pay attention to the words we use and noticing how that can come together in an artistic way to help us to expand our thoughts and expression.”
That expression finds its way into physical movement, film poetry and other media that always keeps the work fresh and exciting.
Enjoy an evening with Tara Dawn Solheim at St. Peter’s College on Thursday at 7. All are welcome; there is no charge to attend.
