The holiday season is back and so is SGI's Traffic Safety Spotlight, this month SGI is encouraging southwest motorists to stay safe and give the gift of a safe ride home.

With Christmas parties, family gatherings, and meetings of friends, it's a crucial time of year to ensure everyone can enjoy the holidays again.

Jeremy Pilon, communications consultant at SGI, noted that one-third of all fatal collisions in Saskatchewan are the result of drug or alcohol impairment.

"This time of year is a time of celebration," he said. "We just want to remind people to take the time to make a plan and get a safe ride home, we've got a little bit of a list we put together and we've even checked it twice like Santa."

SGI's list of safe ride home options includes; designating a sober driver or volunteering to be one, taking the bus, calling a sober friend or family member, staying overnight, or using a cab or designated driving service.

Last year, 29 individuals lost their lives in impaired driving collisions in Saskatchewan, while another 338 people were injured.

"That's 29 people that could've made it home that night, that could've enjoyed Christmas again this year," shared Pilon. "That's why just taking the time to make a safe ride is important."

Additionally, some communities in the province may have seasonal safe ride options such as Operation Red Nose and Ride for Free on NYE.
