Doug Pliszka passed away on the morning of December 5, 2024 with his wife of 26 years, Jackie, by his side at the Brandon Regional Health Centre in the Palliative Care Unit.

Known to many as The King, The Legend, and a very lovable and magnetic, Grouch. Also known as Pickey to a life long friend (and chosen sister) who couldn’t pronounce Pliszka as a young person. We loved him as Doug, Dougie, Dad, Grandpa, and Gramps.

Born and raised in Portage la Prairie, Doug was a life-long lover of hunting, was a duck hunting guide in Delta Marsh, a volunteer firefighter in Portage with a career in water treatment; he later moved to the Brandon area and studied to become a power engineer at Shilo, Manitoba.

Doug’s friends were incredibly important to him. He was well-known for dropping in on his buddies and welcoming family and friends into his home in Brandon. There were lively get-togethers, full of shenanigans, as well as plenty of time spent at Tintown and later, at the cabin he built next to Mallard Lodge near Delta Marsh.

Always an avid sportsman, Doug played hockey in his younger years and continued with curling, and coaching and playing baseball for a great many years while also following his NHL teams, and of course the Blue Jays, and Blue Bombers.

Even though Doug was known as a strong man, some of us also knew he watched Y&R for decades and could be rather easily convinced to watch a cheesy romance movie instead of his first choice - an action flick.

Doug is survived by his wife, Jackie Pliszka (née Johnston), and children; Harold Pliszka (partner Janet and kids Hailey and Reuben), Cindy Pliszka-Milligan (partner David Milligan), Nolan Imlach (partner Stephanie Ryckman and kids Madisyn and Alex), Erin Imlach (partner Adam McLoughlin and kids Juniper and Wynnie), brother-in-law Dave McDonald.

Also grieving are Doug’s sister Donna Bottcher (partner Fred), ex-wife and longtime friend Marlene Pliszka (née Tully), sisters-in-law Cindy Charlton (partner Gary) and Sher MacDonald (partner Glenn), their families, brother-in-law Dave McDonald, and Doug’s many close friends, nieces, nephews and extended family members across Manitoba, Canada and USA.

Doug was predeceased by his sister Sonya McDonald (née, Pliszka), his brother Wayne Pliszka (died in infancy), his mother Rose Pliszka (née, Popko), and father Michael Pliszka.

Causes Doug supported include; Delta Waterfowl, Ducks Unlimited, Salvation Army, and variety of Cancer prevention, research and care societies.
