It’s the third year running for Horned Hereford Sale at Log Valley Ranch.

Co-owners Mike and Matt Jahnke say that the bulls have really taken off this year after such a warm fall, and that they’re looking forward to another great auction with their fellow ranchers.

Log Valley Ranch sits 25 miles north of Morse on Lake Diefenbaker. The ranch runs approximately 600 commercial cows, plus another 100 registered Herefords. They also background an average of 250 calves every winter.

“We sell the majority of our steers off in the fall,” Mike Jahnke says. “We typically sell 30 bulls and 40-50 bred heifers in our Bull Sale every year- that bull and heifer sale is always the third Thursday in December.”

That sale is coming up this week on Thursday, December 19th. The 2024 Horned Hereford Sale will feature 30 horned Hereford bulls, 70 commercial bred heifers, two registered heifer calves, and two broke saddle horses. The Jahnkes are extremely proud of this year’s offerings, stressing high quality throughout all the available lots.

Log Valley Ranch was originally run by Jahnke’s father and three uncles, but has been run by Mike and Matt Jahnke for the last decade. One of the biggest changes made over the years was the shift from commercial cattle to registered Herefords. Jahnke says he finds this breed to be a most efficient, easy-going animal that thrives in our hard Canadian winters. He also notes that they are an excellent outcross for most cattlemen.

Looking forward, Jahnke says the ranch isn’t looking to expand the business.

“I mean, we buy land when it’s available to grow, but it’s not so much expanding as it is improving what we’ve already got. Being more efficient with what we already have.”

The Jahnkes also see the value in building lasting relationships with their clients beyond a single sale.

“We’re honest. We strive to have a quality product that we stand behind. We’ve always run cattle to make them work for us, you know, instead of having to work for them. We cull hard- we make sure that any animal that we sell is something we would be willing to use ourselves. We’re not just selling for the sake of a quick buck- we take pride in what we sell.”

The Log Valley Ranch Horned Hereford Sale happens Thursday, December 19th at 2:00 PM at the Ranch, just north of Morse off Highway 1. Learn more or place your bid on DLMS, browse their livestock catalogue here, or call Mike Jahnke at 1-(306)-629-7311.
