Walter Francis Sarauer
April 23, 1930 – December 20, 2024

Walter Francis Sarauer was born April 23, 1930, to John and Mary (née Braun) Sarauer in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. He was the youngest of ten children and grew up on a farm west of Annaheim, SK. He attended Schuler School and completed his education at St. Peter’s College. On June 19, 1951, he married Laura Ramler and together they raised seven children on a farm, two and a half miles south of his childhood home. In 1998, Walter and Laura retired to Humboldt, but Walter continued to help out on the farm which was taken over by his son Jim. Laura passed away in February 2007, after a brief illness, a few months shy of their 56th wedding anniversary. In December 2007, Walter married Marcella Pomedli (née Lummerding), who had eleven children of her own. In 2018 they moved to the Caleb, where Marcella continues to reside. Walter spent his last year in Quill Plains Centennial Lodge and then St. Mary’s Villa. Walter spent much of his free time in service to others, as a choir member, reader, Eucharistic minister, and lay presider at St. Ann’s and St. Augustine Parishes, honorary member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of numerous community boards. He enjoyed singing, woodworking, playing cards and visiting with family and friends. Walter is survived by: his wife of 17 years, Marcella; 6 children: JIM (Debbie) Sarauer, CAROL (Dave) Ebert, ERIC (Louise Sarauer, ANNETTE (Dean) Magus, ROD (Sharmon) Sarauer, and MARYLU Rheaume; daughter-in-law Ruth Sarauer; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; sister-in-law Val Sarauer; Marcella’s family; and numerous nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by: his first wife Laura; son Willard Sarauer, grandson James Ebert, Marcella’s daughter and son-in-law; his parents and siblings; and numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews. The Prayer Service was held at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, SK, on Thursday, December 26, 2024, at7:30 pm. Fr. Colin Roy presided, and Janice Martin and Gordon Leuschen were readers. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, SK, on Friday, December 27, 2024, at 1:00 pm, celebrated by Fr. Colin Roy, concelebrated by Fr. Lawrence DeMong, OSB. Others taking part were: Keira Magus, cross bearer; Maston Rohel, alter server; Erin Cordes and Christine Messer, scripture readers; Robin Armstrong, intentions; Tara Howson and Shaylyn Fogen, gift bearers; Sayle and Jersey Stadnyk and Camryn and Gemma Sarauer, memorial table attendants; and Annette Magus, eulogist. Music ministry was provided by St. Augustine Parish Funeral Choir, directed by Loretta Shugmann and the pianist was Denise Germain. Active pallbearers were Clayton Sarauer, Shane Sarauer, Sarah Sarauer, Cole Rheaume, Will Magus, and Stan Rohel with an Honor Guard formed by Knights of Columbus. Interment was at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Cemetery, Humboldt, SK, followed by the memorial luncheon at the St. Augustine Parish Hall. Memorial donations may be directed to St. Mary’s Villa Foundation - Building Fund (PO Box 1743, Humboldt, SK S0K 2A0).
