Curling ice technicians from across west central Saskatchewan are stepping into the spotlight this week as they volunteer at the Saskatchewan Curling Provincials in Kindersley. Working alongside some of Canada’s most skilled ice technicians, these volunteers are taking the opportunity to learn from the best while ensuring the competition’s playing surface meets world-class standards.
Among them is John Butt, the dedicated ice technician at the Leader Curling Club, who views this experience as an invaluable opportunity.
“The reason I volunteered to help is because these are the best ice makers in the province and, you know, top in the world,” Butt explained. “Anytime you can volunteer and help with them and learn something from them, that’s better than any school you’re going to go to for ice making.”
Butt is one of several volunteers working late shifts throughout the week to maintain the ice for the provincial competition, which features both men’s and women’s teams.
The volunteers, who represent curling clubs across the region, are not only ensuring the success of the Provincials but also taking valuable lessons back to their home rinks. The skills they gain will benefit curling enthusiasts in their communities, ensuring top-tier ice conditions for years to come.
The event has also become a celebration of the camaraderie and passion that unite Saskatchewan’s curling community. Whether it's maintaining pebbling perfection or nailing the precise temperature balance, the work of these volunteers highlights the importance of teamwork both on and off the ice.
