For the first time ever, there are more new COVID-19 cases in fully vaccinated Manitobans than those who are not vaccinated at all. However, the number of intensive care hospitalizations for those fully vaccinated remains low.

"We see constantly that the risks, particularly of the severe outcomes, are much much higher in those who are not vaccinated, but the risks are not zero in people who are vaccinated," Dr. Joss Reimer, the medical co-lead of Manitoba's vaccine task force says in a Wednesday press conference.

There are 156 new COVID-19 cases in Manitoba. This brings the total number of cases to 64,701.

Out of the new cases, 70 people are not vaccinated, 10 are partially vaccinated, and 76 are fully vaccinated.

Cases by heath region include:

  • 56 in Southern
  • 53 in Winnipeg
  • 31 in Prairie Mountain
  • seven in Northern
  • nine in Interlake-Eastern

There are 1,377 active cases and  62,062 people have recovered from the virus. Six more people have died since Friday, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,262.

Deaths since Friday include:

  • a female in her 40s from Northern health region linked to an unspecified variant of concern (reported Friday)
  • a male in his 70s from Prairie Mountain Health and linked to the outbreak at Health Sciences Centre GD2 (reported Friday)
  • a female in her 70s from Prairie Mountain Health linked to an unspecified variant of concern (reported Saturday)\
  • a male in his 70s from Southern Health-Santé Sud (reported Saturday)
  • a female in her 70s from Southern Health-Santé Sud (reported Saturday)
  • a female in her 70s from Southern Health-Santé Sud (reported Sunday)
  • a female in her 80s from Winnipeg health region linked to an unspecified variant of concern (reported Sunday)
  • a female in her 80s from Prairie Mountain Health linked to the outbreak at Benito Personal Care Home (reported Saturday)
  • a female in her 90s from Prairie Mountain Health linked to an unspecified variant of concern and the outbreak at Benito Personal Care Home (reported Friday)

 

Manitoba's five-day test positivity rate is 5.4 per cent. Winnipeg's test rate is 2.7 per cent. Test rates for regions other than Winnipeg are shared on a bi-weekly basis, with the latest numbers from Friday.

Since Friday, there have been 624 new COVId cases including:

  • 130 cases on Friday
  • 183 cases on Saturday
  • 155 cases on Sunday
  • 156 cases on Monday

Hospitalizations

 

There are 141 people in the hospital because of COVID-19, with 112 of those people having active cases. Sixty-two of those with active cases are not vaccinated, 44 are fully vaccinated, and six people are partly vaccinated.

There are 26 people in intensive care, with all but eight of those people having active cases. Sixteen people who have active cases are not vaccinated and two are fully vaccinated.

 

Outbreaks

There are four new COVID-19 outbreak sites in Manitoba, all moving to Critical (Red) level on the #RestartMB Pandemic Response System.

This includes:

  • Neepawa Health Centre in Neepawa
  • Russell Health Centre in Russell
  • Third Crossing Manor Personal Care Home in Gladstone

Health Sciences Centre GD2 surgery unit, École St. Malo School cohort grades 5 and 6, Springs Christian Academy Lagimodiere campus and Light of the North Covenant Church's outbreaks are over.

 

An earlier statement from the province said the outbreak was over at Health Sciences Centre GD4 medical unit in Winnipeg. This has since been corrected.
