Provincial Champions ready for Nationals
Morden’s own Team Sugden is on their way to the U18 National Curling Championships in Saskatoon after a hard-fought victory at the U18 Provincials earlier this month. With high expectations and strong momentum, second Tanner Treichel and his teammates are eager to represent Manitoba on the national stage from February 16th to 22nd.
Reflecting on their provincial win, Treichel shared, “Our first game was a bit shaky, but we built momentum as we went. The semi-final and final were really close, and I’m excited to go to nationals with this team.”
The team is no stranger to the big stage, having also qualified for nationals last year. With that experience under their belt, the players have set their sights on an even stronger performance this time around. “There was definitely more pressure this year,” said Treichel. “Last year, we made it to nationals, so we had the goal of winning provincials again. But once we got into it, we just focused on playing our game.”

Fundraiser to support the journey
Competing at a national level comes with significant costs, and Team Sugden is turning to the community for support. After a successful fundraiser at Rocks Bar & Grill on January 24th, they are hosting another event at the Morden Curling Club on Thursday, February 6th, from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
“We’re going to have a 50/50 draw, a cash bar, and a silent auction,” Treichel said. “It’s pretty much a social where people can come support us and have a good time.”
Tickets for the event are only $10 and can be purchased at the door. For those who prefer to secure their tickets in advance, they can contact Sue at 204-791-8768.

A strong curling legacy
Treichel’s passion for curling runs deep, having been introduced to the sport by his family at a young age. “My grandpa was a big curler, and so were my parents. I was always around the rink growing up,” he shared. “But I stuck with it because I love the friendships you make through curling. On the ice, you compete hard, but after the game, you get to just hang out with your opponents. That’s what makes curling special.”
With Nationals just around the corner, Team Sugden is preparing both physically and financially for the challenge ahead. “We wouldn’t be where we are without our coach, Gord,” said Treichel. “His guidance has been incredible.”
The community is invited to come out on February 6th to show their support and help the team on their road to Saskatoon. With a fun evening planned and a talented team ready to compete, it’s shaping up to be an exciting event both on and off the ice.
