The passing of John Falk, a well-known former town councillor and community leader in Niverville, has left a lasting impact on the town, with many remembering his selfless contributions to the community, his family, and his faith.
Clarence Braun, former mayor of Niverville
Braun spoke with deep respect for Falk, recalling his early vision for Niverville and his dedication to youth in the community.
“John was an out-of-the-box thinker. He was an idea guy. In his early 20s, he started one of the first youth drop-in centers in Manitoba. He really had a heart for kids who were lost or struggling, even kids from church families who were having a tough time. He just saw a need and acted,” Braun said.
Falk’s passion for helping young people didn’t end there. The youth drop-in center he helped establish eventually became a part of Youth for Christ Niverville, continuing to serve kids in the area for years.
“He didn’t just want to help; he made sure there was something in place for the long run,” Braun added.
John Falk’s influence extended far beyond youth programs. In the world of business and community development, Falk’s vision played a role in bringing together entrepreneurs and business leaders in the town.
“About 10 to 12 years ago, he started organizing special events to bring business people together, encouraging them to believe in their potential and the future of Niverville. His vision was always about community growth, about making things better for everyone,” Braun said.
Although Falk wasn’t directly involved in the planning of the Niverville CRRC (Community Recreation and Resource Centre), Braun emphasized that Falk’s passion for recreation and community development played a significant role in inspiring its creation.
“He had a real heart for expanding recreation options in Niverville. That was something that mattered deeply to him.”
Braun reflected on the legacy Falk leaves behind.
“If you ask me what remains from John’s time here, I’d say it’s the youth drop-in center. That’s the visible legacy he helped build. It wasn’t just about putting up a building; it was about seeing a need and working to fulfill it. He impacted so many lives,” Braun said. “Beyond that, his vision for a growing, caring community will continue to shape Niverville for years to come.”
Braun shared about his personal relationship with Falk.
“John and I were both passionate about Niverville’s future, so we worked together a lot on political and business matters. We weren’t the closest of friends, but one thing about John was that he cared. And when something needed to be done to help others, he was there, no questions asked. That’s what stands out to me about him.”
Braun shared heartfelt words for Falk’s family.
“I know John didn’t want to leave. He wanted to keep being a part of the community and his family’s life. To Irene and the kids, know that John’s legacy of love, care, and growth will always be with you. You’re in my thoughts.”
Current Niverville Mayor Myron Dyck shares his thoughts on Falk’s legacy
“It was truly a pleasure to serve with John. He was a friend, a colleague, and someone who cared deeply about this community. John was a hard worker and always put the people of Niverville first. He was always looking for ways to make the community better, and I’m grateful for everything he did.”
Dyck continued, “John was a positive, encouraging person who always had time for people. Whether it was his family, his friends, or anyone in the community, John was someone who made time for others. He’ll be missed by all of us.”
