A video posted online Wednesday morning captured a dangerous near-miss between a semi-truck and a snow plow on a highway just south of Kindersley, bringing attention to the vital importance of exercising patience on Saskatchewan’s winter roads.

The footage shows the semi attempting to pass another semi in low visibility, narrowly avoiding a collision with a snow plow. This incident underscores the risks that impatient driving poses not only to motorists but also to the operators working tirelessly to keep highways safe.

Dan Palmer, a spokesperson for the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways, emphasized the need for caution when encountering snow plows on the road.

“We’ve got our fleet out there clearing snow and treating ice as needed,” said Palmer. “The key thing is if you come across a snow plow, stay back and stay safe. Snow plows create a mini blizzard behind them, reducing visibility significantly.”

Palmer stressed that snow plows will pull over every 10 to 15 kilometres when it is safe to do so, allowing vehicles to pass safely. “Be patient,” he urged. “We want everyone—whether it’s the snow plow operator, the driver, or anyone else on the road—to make it home safely.”

Saskatchewan law requires drivers to slow to 60 kilometres per hour when passing stopped snow plows with their lights flashing. Additionally, motorists should never attempt to pass a snow plow on the right, particularly when it’s plowing a passing lane, as this is extremely dangerous.

“Please drive according to the current road conditions,” Palmer added. “Our teammates, whether they’re plow operators, tow truck drivers, or other highway workers, all deserve to get home safe at the end of the day.”

This close call serves as a stark reminder of the importance of patience and safe driving practices during Saskatchewan’s harsh winter months. The Ministry of Highways encourages all drivers to respect snow plows and prioritize safety over speed when travelling in adverse weather conditions.
