When it comes to police services, images of cruisers and cops on the front lines often spring to mind, but the Winkler Police Service has seen an addition to their team over the last few years of a different kind.
Police Chaplain Arnie Klassen accepted the role roughly two years ago, according to Winkler Police Chief Ryan Hunt, just after his retirement from the force.
A new role for the Winkler Police Service
Police Chief Ryan Hunt shared that though other police services have Chaplains, the Winkler Police Service had never had one before.
“When I became chief about six years ago, it was a goal that I had. I thought it’d be nice to have a police chaplain available, as many other police services do.”
And while the role is a relatively new one, Klassen’s open-door policy has already proven to be of immense value. “He comes in, meets with all of the members, and just keeps in touch with each one,” Hunt explained. “It’s important that he comes into the office and keeps the window of communication open.”
Supporting mental and emotional well-being
The role of the chaplain extends beyond simply offering a listening ear. While Chaplain Klassen is not formally trained in mental health, his role complements the well-being efforts of the department. Chief Hunt emphasized, “It’s a bit of an addition to health and well-being for our members,” he shared, saying that often, Klassen will be present at critical incidents to offer support and comfort to officers who may be dealing with difficult situations.
“Police officers are always dealing with people when they’re at their lowest and struggling,” explained Hunt, “We’re always dealing with the negative aspect of society, and it does wear on a police officer over time. So, it’s important to have opportunities in place where officers can reach out for help when they want to.”
The presence of Chaplain Arnie Klassen has already and continues to make a meaningful difference for the officers of the Winkler Police Service, offering a valuable resource in maintaining the mental and emotional well-being of those who serve the community.
