Looking south along the South Buffalo Drain, just west of Altona

Rhineland council has had a follow up meeting with Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Lisa Naylor, with a number of issues in the municipality the focus.

"This is a follow up from the AMM convention," explained Reeve Don Wiebe. "We had booked a session with the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, and so this is a follow up because of issues of her being oversubscribed at that conference."

Council underlines concerns

"At this meeting members of Council had the opportunity to underline our concerns, with respect to maintenance of provincial drains," explained Wiebe, who noted the conversation was specifically about the South Buffalo and the Rosenheim drains. "Heavy summer rains resulted in local flooding, and producers in the area experienced significant crop loss. Improved drainage would certainly help to mitigate this crop loss."

Wiebe added the topics of bridges and crossings were also on the agenda, and council was pleased to hear low level crossings are still under consideration.

PR 201 and 306 addressed

Since a fatal collision last November at the intersection claimed the lives of a 35-year-old mother and her 8-year-old daughter from the municipality, Council has been pushing the Province to take urgent action to make the intersection safer.

"Finally, we also confirmed the department would be looking at safety concerns with respect to that 201 and 306 intersection," he added.

Council had sent an extensive letter to the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure outlining the case for improvements that would, hopefully, further alert motorists to the oncoming 2-way stop. In September 2009, the Province added rumble strips on PR201, both westbound and eastbound, in an effort to do just that.

Don Wiebe made the comments for the latest episode of Reeve on the Radio, which you can listen to below.
