The La Verendrye School (LVS) girls' basketball team celebrated an exciting victory in their season finale, securing the championship with a dominant 64-37 win over École Arthur Meighen. The win capped off an undefeated season for the team, a remarkable achievement that left both players and coaches with pride.
Head coach Samantha Turner reflected on the success, saying,
"It was very exciting. All three of us coaches are so proud of the girls. It was the best basketball they've played all season. They had a great attitude and didn't give up the entire game."
Turner also highlighted the leadership shown by the team.
"We didn't have a ton of returning players this year, but our few returning players really stepped up. We also had a couple of Grade 6's who played well above their years."
Turner, who has been coaching alongside Dillon Grant for two years, shared her appreciation for their supportive coaching dynamic.
"It's great to coach with people I consider friends, not just coworkers. This year, Natasha Esquivel joined us and called herself our ‘good luck charm." Turner added, laughing.
Grade 8 players Tara Cleaver and Skylar Pichette Spence, who are set to move on after this season, reflected on their time with the team. Cleaver shared,
"I feel really happy and proud of my team, but I'm sad the season is over. My favorite memory was how close our team was. I'll miss my coaches and teammates."
Pichette Spence echoed her teammate, saying,
"I'm so happy. My last year of elementary basketball ended with a win. I'm very proud of all the girls and how much they have grown their skills over the season. I'm also sad that the basketball season is over because it's my favorite sport."
As the season closes, Coach Turner offered advice for the future of the grade 8 players.
"I hope the Grade 8s continue to give it their all in high school basketball. I think many of them will make high school teams if they try out."
The championship win marks the perfect end to a memorable season for the LVS girls basketball team.
