It appears that the cold snap that hit the Strathmore area is finally behind us.
Earlier this week, temperatures were reaching an overnight low near -40°C including the windchill, which led to an extreme cold warning being issued.
"It was a bit late as what we would normally expect, but we normally get a cold spell at some time during the winter," said Andy Yun, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).
However, temperatures quickly rose, with Friday, Feb. 20, calling for a daytime high of 4°C.
Temperatures are expected to remain in the positives throughout the weekend and well into next week, with temperatures reaching a high of 8°C on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"The interesting thing about the Calgary area, we started looking at statistics swinging out of the cold snap, and how common it is to get a 20°C upswing in temperature, and it's not that unusual," added Yun.
ECCC claims that the extreme cold came from a polar vortex, which sends cold arctic air southward.
