Today marks three years since Russia rolled into Ukraine, expecting a quick victory. However, what Putin deemed a 'special military operation' has turned into Europe's largest conflict since World War II. Entire cities, towns and villages have been razed to the ground, millions of Ukrainians became refugees and tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians have been killed.
It is at this time that we think of that war-torn land and the many who ache for their home country living here in the Westman Region.
Samaritan House Ministries Executive Director, Heather Symbalisty, says their fundraiser walk, the Coldest Night of the Year takes place today, and if they could change the date they would, in honor of the many lost. However, as their event is a national event, they have no way of changing it.
"I just want to acknowledge that today, February 22nd there is a walk for the Ukrainian community which acknowledges the day of the invasion in Ukraine," she shares. "So, we respectfully want to share that we see the hardships and the strength that the Ukrainian community shows, and the challenges they've had to face over the last number of years."
"And we walk alongside them during the challenges that they face," adds Symbalisty. "We understand the day of February 22nd is important and that the Ukrainian people need to recognize their home country and what they have been going through."
