For Sholter Horsman Furniture & Appliance co-owners Jerry Van Roon and Connie Van Roon, the recent relocation from Estevan to Weyburn was almost like a homecoming.
“I grew up in Weyburn, so I’m quite familiar with it,” says Jerry. “We thought it was a great time for us to move a furniture store here.”
Having owned the family-run Sholter Horsman for 45 years, neither Jerry nor Connie were ready to retire, and with their children living in Weyburn the move made sense. Weyburn residents will now be able to shop for brand-name fridges, ovens, couches and other appliances and furniture items in southern Saskatchewan’s largest showroom. And if they happen to see something they like while browsing, they’re welcome to buy it.
“We do sell off the floor; we don’t have to order in,” says Jerry. “We’re trying to keep a big line of products.”
As an exclusive dealer of Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana appliances, Sholter Horsman carries an impressive variety of fridges, freezers, ovens and other kitchen must-haves. But what really sets the store apart is the product knowledge and expertise.
For example, Jerry always reminds potential customers to make sure they’ve properly measured the space they have available for a fridge before making a purchase.
“The biggest thing people need to know is that all fridges are different,” he explains. “Stoves and dishwashers are basically the same size. Measuring for their fridge is probably something most people forget when they come in.”
Being mindful of the room taken up by large pieces of furniture is also important, says Van Roon, as a sectional will use a lot of it, and even a dresser might seem larger in the bedroom than on the showroom floor.
Then there are the mattresses.
“I always say if you’re going to get a decent mattress, get a pocket coil because it works like a shock absorber and is easier on your body,” says Jerry. “Most of the pocket coils we carry also have a 10-year warranty. But if you’re buying for a cabin or something like that, a continuous coil is fine.”
Sholter Horsman can also have custom-sized mattresses made for RVs and other smaller spaces.
“If you’ve made some renovations and are a little tight for space, we can get you a mattress that’ll fit in there,” Jerry says.
Customers will also appreciate the store’s repair services, which are done locally. In other words, buyers don’t have to wait for someone to come in from a larger, far-away centre such as Winnipeg to have their appliances fixed.
“Some of the other furniture stores in Saskatchewan don’t have repair guys,” Jerry points out. “We actually have two that can provide service to our customers. We fix the appliances we sell, like Whirlpool and Maytag, because we’re an exclusive dealer with them.”
Overall, Van Roon and Sholter Horsman are delighted to be in Weyburn.
“We’re happy to be in the community,” says Jerry. “Our biggest focus is on appliances, but we do have a big line-up of sofas, too.”
