The striking education support staff workers had some company on the picket lines in High River Thursday (Feb. 27) morning.

Members of the AUPE, the Alberta Union for Public Employees, joined CUPE 5040 striking workers near Spitzee Elementary School.

They were set up by George Lane Park around the corner from the school.

AUPE Vice President Bonnie Gustola and other AUPE members joined them in solidarity this morning.

"These are very poorly paid workers that are the number one and main supports for kids with special needs. Those kids that need the help and they are the backbone of that support system in every school across the province. And I actually have a vested interest, my granddaughter is autistic, and she is one of those children that is getting that support from these workers. It was nice to see... put names to faces when I walked the line with the members this morning."

CUPE 5040 have been on strike since Monday and represents about 300 workers in the Foothills School Division.

According to the CUPE 5040 website, wages are a large part of why they are on strike.
