The Foothills Falcons are getting ready to play for provincial playoffs.

They did not have any games last week, but they spent their time practicing for the upcoming South-Central Zone Championship.

As part of this year's Zone Championship, teams from Foothills Composite High School, Holy Trinity Academy, Chestermere, Bert Church, George McDougall, and Croxford will all be competing to see who the zone champion is.

The championship begins tonight (Tuesday, March 4), but because both of the senior Falcons boys and girls teams secured the #1 spot for the tournament, both teams received a bye through the first round of the championship games, and don't play their first game until Wednesday night.

As part of this championship, the gold and silver medalists will qualify for the Provincial playoffs.

This year, the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association has made changes to the format of the provincial playoffs.

Instead of the 16-team tournament happening all at one location, they have decided there will be four regional tournaments instead.

The zones with highly ranked teams will host brackets of 4 teams, which will compete in the regional tournament.

Each regional tournament winner will advance to the Provincial Championship, which will take place in Calgary.

Due to the South-Central Zone, which the Falcons are competing in, is so competitive and ranked this season, the champion of this zone will host one of the regional tournaments.

The senior boys Falcons will tip off on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Foothills Composite High School, and the girls will take the court shortly afterwards at 7:30.
