Premier Danielle Smith isn't happy about the tariffs imposed on Canadian goods by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Premier Smith released a statement on Tuesday morning (March 4), expressing her dissatisfaction over the tariffs.
"The tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump are an unjustifiable economic attack on Canadians and Albertans," Premier Smith explained in the release. "They also represent a clear breach of the trade agreement signed by this same U.S. President during his first term."
Smith went on to say that these tariffs will not only cost hundreds of thousands of Americans and Canadians their jobs, but they will also hurt the American people by driving up the cost for fuel, food, vehicles, housing, and many more products.
"This policy is both foolish and a failure in every regard," Smith adds. "This is not the way it should be between two of the world’s strongest trading allies and partners. We would much rather be working with the U.S. on mutually beneficial trade deals than be caught in the middle of a tariff war."
In her statement, Premier Smith says that her government fully supports Prime Minister Trudeau's response to the tariffs, and she has been working with her cabinet to discuss how Alberta will respond to these "illegal tariffs".
Now that these tariffs have been implemented, Smith says that it is time for everyone to unite as a province and a country and do everything possible to immediately tear down the provincial trade barriers and fast-track the construction of dozens of resource projects,
Not only that, but Smith is also calling for strengthened ties with Europe, Asia, and the Americas for energy, agricultural, and manufactured products.
"We also need to drastically increase military spending to ensure we can protect our nation. There is no time to waste on any of these initiatives."
Premier Smith says she will provide more information on Wednesday, March 5 following meetings with her cabinet regarding the tariffs.
