There is a plan to bring a passenger rail system to Alberta.

After it was officially announced last April that the Government of Alberta was creating plans for the new rail system, which would help to connect communities in Alberta, including Okotoks.

The provincial government is in the process of creating a Passenger Rail Master Plan, which will help to assess how feasible it is to have a passenger rail system in the province.

That includes regional, commuter, and high-speed services.

Currently, the rail line will go between Edmonton and Calgary, with a line also going between Calgary and Okotoks, as well as between Calgary and the Rocky Mountains.

While the Passenger Rail Master Plan is expected to be completed and revealed this summer, there are opportunities for Albertans to get involved and provide their input.

On top of open houses happening in Calgary, Canmore, Red Deer, and Edmonton, there will be a virtual session happening on April 3, where everyone across the province is invited.

There is also an online survey, where people can provide their input prior to April 15.

The survey asks how people usually commute, how they travel to other cities and communities, which rail services the person has used prior, and more.

Once the public engagement portion is completed, they will complete a Calgary Airport Rail Connection study, and then present their Passenger Rail Master Plan later this year.
