After a months-long search, the Winnipeg Police Service has announced its new chief of police.

The Winnipeg Police Board announced Friday that Deputy Police Chief Gene Bowers will take over the role previously held by Danny Smyth, who retired from the WPS in September 2024 after a nearly four-decade-long career.

Bowers has been with the Winnipeg Police Service since 1989. Since then, he has held a variety of roles in the force, including positions in Uniform Operations, administrative sections, and criminal investigations.

"We have a tremendous confidence in [Bower's] integrity, vision and courage that he will serve the Winnipeg Police Service and City of Winnipeg, as well," said Markus Chambers, city councilor and chair of the Winnipeg Police Board.

He will assume the role of police chief effective March 10.
