Now that the snow has begun to melt, thanks to the warm sunshine, there are ways to prevent water buildup.

The Town of High River reminds people that while melting snow and ice can create overland water buildup, such as large puddles on streets and sidewalks, standing water can become a problem.

It can be especially problematic if the water blocks pathways, causes groundwater flooding, or freezes and creates icy patches.

To help prevent water build up around the home, it's advised to clear storm drains around the home of any debris to make sure water drains properly, as well as direct eavestroughs away from buildings to prevent water from pooling at the base of the building.

If there is any snow left to shovel, the Town is suggesting shoveling it onto the lawn or garden instead of the road, which will not only help to keep drains clear, but it will also help to add moisture into the yard once it melts.

On top of that, the Town is reminding people to regularly check for signs of foundation cracks or erosion, which can allow water to seep into the home.

For those who experience a sewer backup, High River residents are able to call the Town public works division at 403-652-4657, and town crews will assess whether or not it is the main sewer main line or the lines on the private property.
