March's unpredictability when it comes to weather is on display this morning with an intense low-pressure system rolling through central Saskatchewan to Southeaster Alberta.

Along with blowing snow, heavy at times, comes reduced visibility on the highways, so take care on your travels. It will also come with a steep drop in temperatures, says Dan Fulton with Environment Canada.

“Associated with the low-pressure system is a cold front moving through southern Saskatchewan. We’re looking at a pretty decent amount of snow for the Humboldt region, at around 5 to 10 centimetres which should end this afternoon sometime.”

That front is dragging cold air with it, so our plus zero temperatures will vacate for the next couple of days as overnight lows plunge to –18. Temperatures are expected to recover on Tuesday to a daytime high of –3and by Thursday, it’s back on the plus side.

That may not last into the weekend, Fulton notes.

“As we get to the end of the work week, there’s the potential for another system – lots of uncertainty with this one right now, but it looks like somewhere in the southern prairies, we’ll see heavy snow.  As to exactly where, that’s still up in the air. As that system comes through, we’re expecting to tap into much colder air, so we’ll see a return to quite a bit colder temperatures through the remainder of the weekend and into next week.

Today’s snow and blowing snow are expected to abate in the afternoon. As always, check into the Saskatchewan Highway Hotline to help you navigate the wintry weather
