Fire fighters were called to Altona's high school this morning after a school bus burst into flames.

Greg Zimmerman, Chief for Altona/Rhineland Emergency Services (ARES), says 15 members responded to the call at 9:27 a.m. and found the bus, parked in the compound behind W.C. Miller Collegiate, on fire.

Because the driver had completed their run for the morning, Zimmerman says there were no students on board at the time. He explained, the driver parked the bus at the compound, plugged in the block heater and went home. Shortly after, someone noticed it was on fire.

When asked if he knew the cause of the blaze, Zimmerman said the flames were located at the front of the bus where the block heater was plugged in.

In a statement to PembinaValleyOnline, Krista Curry, superintendent of Border Land School Division, thanked the fire fighters and local police officers for their quick response which led to no other damage being reported to nearby buildings.
