Ladies Breakaway Roping is officially coming to the Calgary Stampede this year.

Rodeo fans in the Foothills have been enjoying this for a few years now, but this will be the first time the event will be added to the Calgary Stampede lineup.

The partnership with the Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) will bring the crowd to their feet watching ladies in lightning-fast time.

With winning times often clocking in at under two seconds, you can see why it's one of the fastest growing rodeo events.

The rider has to rope a calf, stop their horse, and break the rope from the saddle horn.

The event also allows women to enter another event besides barrel racing to collect top payouts.

Prize money will be on par with the other six rodeo events. Over $310,000 will be paid out to women in this year's event.

It also ups the total prize money available at this year's Stampede to just over $2.1 million.

The event was featured in the 2023 and 2024 'Rocky Mountain Cup' but hasn't been an official event until now. The Rocky Mountain Cup was used to showcase Ladies Breakaway Roping and Team Roping but will now shift to focus on Team Roping exclusively.

It also marks the first time a new event has been added to the Stampede's lineup since Ladies Barrel Racing was introduced in 1979.

30 spots will be up for grabs for this year's Calgary Stampede which runs from July 4 to 13.
