The Rotary Club of Okotoks' Canadian flag program has seen a rise in popularity amid a boost in patriotism across Canada.

The Rotary Club of Okotoks launched its Canadian flag program early this year.

The annual program allows Okotokians to pay $75 to have volunteers from the Rotary Club and the Okotoks Scouts install a large Canadian flag on their front lawn over the Victoria Day, Canada Day, and Labour Day long weekends.

According to the Okotoks Rotary Club's president, Jeff Foss, the decision to open registrations early was prompted by the recent wave of patriotism across the country, and it seems like the decision was the right one.

"We have an inventory of 400 flags around Okotoks, and so far, we've sold in the neighbourhood of 100 flags. We hope to sell out in advance for the Victoria Day long weekend," says Foss.

It would be a milestone for the club, should they meet that goal.

According to Foss, they've averaged around 200 flags sold per year in recent years.

The involvement of the Okotoks Scouts was introduced last year and will be returning in 2025.

With the program being volunteer run, all of the proceeds go to the two local groups.

"Because the materials are already bought and paid for, there's no overhead, so all the money raised goes directly to our Rotary and Scouts programs."

Some of those Rotary programs include their Youth Entrepreneurship and Leadership Camps, and Foss says they've be lending a hand to a beloved local organization too.

"We've committed to working with the Foothills County Hospice and assisting with their expansion and the cost related to that. Between the Okotoks and High River club, we've committed to equipping one of the new eight rooms that's in the extension."

More information on the flag program can be seen on the Okotoks Rotary Club's website.
