NDP candidate Shannon Corbett took an early lead minutes after polls closed in the Transcona byelection, and she never looked back.
All 14 polls had reported by 8:39 p.m. on Tuesday, and Corbett claimed victory with 3,616 votes. The PC candidate, Shawn Nason, came in second with 1,569 votes.
The results are unofficial and will be confirmed by Friday.
From one educator to another
Winnipeggers living in the provincial riding of Transcona went to the polls today to elect a new MLA following the death of former education minister Nello Altomare.
Corbett is also an educator who was serving as Vice Principal of Transcona Collegiate when the byelection was called.
Her website's bio says that she worked with Altomare in the school system, "and was honoured to count him as a mentor." Corbett also served as fundraising chair for Altomare's election wins.
For many residents in the riding, it's the second byelection in six months. That's because of a federal byelection held in the Elmwood-Transcona riding on Sept. 16, in which NDP candidate Leila Dance claimed victory.
The four official candidates for Transcona were former Olympian Susan Auch running as an independent, Brad Boudreau running for the Liberals, Shannon Corbett running for the NDP and former city councillor Shawn Nason running as a PC.
Very low turnout
There are 17,910 registered voters in the riding, according to Elections Manitoba's results page.
However, only 5,631 voters, or 31.44 per cent, cast a ballot.
Eighteen people also declined their ballot, and three ballots were rejected.
Elections Manitoba says that the number of registered voters is current to the end of the advance voting period. The final number of voters will be displayed along with the official results.
