Anyone who was at those locations at those times, was born in or after 1970, and has less than two documented doses of measles-containing vaccine, is at risk of contracting measles.
AHS is encouraging people to review their immunization records and monitor themselves for measles symptoms, as measles is an extremely contagious disease that spreads easily through the air.
Symptoms include a fever of 38.3° C or higher, a cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a red blotchy rash that appears three to seven days after the fever begins.
The rash begins behind the ears and on the face but will spread down the body and then to the arms and legs.
If someone develops these symptoms, they are advised to stay home and call Health Link at 811 prior to visiting any healthcare facility or provider, which includes family physician clinics or pharmacies.
While over 90 per cent of those who are not immune to measles and come in contact with the virus will be infected, the measles vaccine is highly effective at preventing infection and complications.
Those who don't have two doses of the measles-containing vaccine and are pregnant, under the age of one, or are adults with a weakened immune system are at a heightened risk of complications from measles and should call 811 as soon as possible if exposed to measles.
The measles vaccine is free through the province's publicly funded immunization program, and children in Alberta generally receive their first vaccine dose at 12 months old, with their second dose following at 18 months old.
To confirm your immunization history, text 'vaccine record' or 'measles' to 88111, call Health Link at 811, or the local public health office.
