The Chestermere Public Library is cleaning up the community around Earth Day.
On April 27 the third annual Clean Up the Lake Initiative is coming to the city, where participants help to clean garbage around John Peake Park and the library's parking lot.
"The big thing is trying to teach people how to clean after themselves, environmentalism, and the conservation of the environment and resources we have," said marketing and social media coordinator Spencer McDonald. "We're on a lake-view property, and we should really be teaching people how to take care of it."
In 2023, the library saw 50 people come out to fill up 18 bags of garbage. The following year there was a smaller turnout, but a higher yield of 20 bags.

"If we can get up to at least 22 or 23 bags, we'll be quite happy with that result," added McDonald.
The event is free to attend with no registration required. The library will also provide participants with free bags, gloves, and garbage pickers.
"It's open for all ages, and we're really looking forward to this event," said McDonald.
The initiative runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
