At last week's Rocky View Schools (RVS) Board of Trustees Meeting, the board heard an update from the RVS’ Indigenous Learning Branch and how they are providing important connections and supports.

According to the school division, established in 2022, RVS’ Indigenous Learning branch supports staff and students in areas such as implementing Indigenous.
Ways of Knowing into practice, professional learning, protocol guidance, planning for recognition for significant events, and
calendar days.

"At full operation, the branch includes a director, three learning specialists, two Indigenous cultural liaisons and two Indigenous connectors who are tasked with providing support to division staff and students and creating connections with members of our Indigenous communities to foster new partnerships and strengthen existing relationships that enhance learning."

The branch also introduced an internal website offering extensive foundational knowledge and curricular resources for multiple grade levels in both English and French.

Some of the important work completed by the team this year includes:

  • Significantly increasing the number of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit guests invited into schools to share their knowledge.
  • Developing the Indigenous learning self-reflection tool, leading professional learning opportunities for teaching and other staff.
  • Facilitating the RVS Indigenous Advisory Circle, which provides guidance and knowledge to support the Board and division.

Also at the latest trustee meeting,  the trustees approved the 3-Year Capital Plan priority list.

The top seven priorities, according to Rocky View Schools, include:

  1. Cochrane - 9-12 school in the community of Horse Creek.
  2. Cochrane - K-8 school in the community of Heartland.
  3. Airdrie - 7-9 school in the community of Cobblestone Creek.
  4. Chestermere - K-9 school in the community of Clearwater Park.
  5. Crossfield - K-8 school in the community of Vista Crossing.
  6. Airdrie - K-9 school in the community of Wildflower or Vantage Rise.
  7. Springbank Middle - An addition to the school.

Earlier in the month, it was announced that Airdrie has received planning funding for a new K-9 (Rocky View Schools) school in the community of Lanark as part of the Alberta government's latest investment in school infrastructure.
