Two people are dead and another two people are in hospital with serious injuries following a Sunday morning collision on a highway in southeastern Manitoba.

The Manitoba RCMP says in a release that the crash occurred around 9:25 a.m., on Highway 12, located approximately five kilometres north of Zhoda.

Investigators believe a minivan, travelling north on Highway 12, attempted to pass a semi-trailer when it collided head-on with a southbound SUV.

The 76-year-old male driver of the minivan, along with a 72-year-old female passenger, were pronounced deceased on scene.

A 37-year-old male passenger from the minivan was transported to hospital in serious condition.

The 41-year-old male driver of the SUV was transported to hospital in critical condition.

Steinbach RCMP, along with a Forensic Collision Reconstructionist, continue to investigate. Zhoda is approximately 70 kilometres southeast of Winnipeg.
