The city is looking for housing developers, non-profits or Indigenous organizations to partner with to help build affordable housing.

To do this, they are making five city-owned properties available for sale or lease through the Housing Accelerator Fund's Land Enhancement Office.

"This is just one of several ongoing initiatives where we're transitioning empty or underused City properties for housing," said Mayor Scott Gillingham. "71,000 people moved here in the last three years and our vacancy rate was cut in half – so Winnipeg has to support more rental housing to accommodate that kind of growth.

The five properties and description of development opportunity include:

  • 825 Taché Avenue – land lease
  • 795 William Avenue – unique partnership or sale
  • 425 Osborne Street – unique partnership
  • 1350 Pembina Highway – sale
  • 569 Watt Street – sale

The city says partnership is key to addressing the city's most pressing challenges.

"Amid a housing crisis, there is no better use for City-owned land than working with developers to build much-needed affordable housing," said councillor Evan Duncan, chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Property and Development. "By working together, we can maximize resources, streamline development, and ensure more residents have access to safe, stable, and affordable homes."
