The Knights of Rizal Airdrie chapter is nearing its fundraising goal for the Dr. Jose Rizal Learning Room in the library part of "Inspire" (Airdrie's new multi-use facility and library).

Jay Raymundo, a representative of the Knights of Rizal Airdrie Chapter explained that they are close to their $20,000 goal, but still need some help from the public.

The naming dedication aims to enhance education, foster cultural awareness, and honour the values of Dr. Jose Rizal, the Filipino national hero renowned for his advocacy of learning, enlightenment, and community involvement.

"The Dr. Jose Rizal Learning Room will be a dedicated space within Inspire, designed to provide resources, programming, and opportunities for residents of Airdrie to learn, grow, and connect. It will support literacy and education and showcase Filipino heritage, history, and contributions, fostering cultural appreciation and community engagement," stated a press release.

Raymundo shared that when the opportunity came up to support the new library, it was a perfect combination of, let's give back to the community and let's support the community.

“With the Inspire Library set to become a cornerstone of knowledge and connection in Airdrie, we believe this learning centre will serve as a lasting tribute to his vision and a vital resource for residents of all backgrounds.”

The Knights of Rizal is a global civic organization devoted to upholding the teachings, values, and legacy of Dr. Jose Rizal. The Airdrie Chapter focuses on community service, education, and cultural preservation, striving to inspire and unite individuals in the pursuit of progress.

With just $1,500 left to reach their goal, you can contact Mark Quintin at mark.quintin@kifs.ca to contribute to the fundraiser.

Last year, the Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Calgary donated several books on Filipino history and culture to the Airdrie Public Library as part of its public and cultural diplomacy program. These books come from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and share the history of the country.

Dr. Rizal was born on June 19, 1861. During his lifetime, he would become a key figure in demanding political reforms when his country would be under the colonial power of Spain. It is believed his writings in part inspired the Philippine Revolution and ultimately led to the independence of his country. Rizal was executed on December 30, 1896, by the Spanish colonial government.

With around 217,000 Filipino residents, Alberta is home to the second-largest Filipino community in Canada, according to the results of the 2021 Census.
