Airdrie RCMP are warning residents about a phone scam in which fraudsters use spoofed phone numbers to pose as Canada Post employees and police officers.
Related Stories:
Victims reported receiving calls from someone claiming to work for Canada Post, alleging they were under investigation for shipping firearm parts.
The call was then transferred to a person impersonating an RCMP officer, who told the victim they were in legal trouble and demanded personal information, including name, birthdate and, in some cases, banking details. The caller may also claim the person is in immediate danger.
Police said spoofing allows scammers to manipulate caller ID so it appears the call is coming from a trusted source, including official agency numbers.
Airdrie RCMP said neither police nor government agencies will ask for personal information over the phone or threaten arrest.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call is urged to hang up immediately and contact the agency directly using a verified phone number.
Suspected fraud can be reported to Airdrie RCMP at 403-945-7267 or to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
