Environment Canada is calling for daytime highs in Airdrie near or just above freezing this week, paired with overnight lows that dip well below zero. That freeze-thaw cycle often leads to slushy surfaces by day and icy patches overnight, especially during early-morning commutes.

Tuesday starts with a high of 12 C and increasing cloud cover. Overnight, the temperature is expected to fall to 1 C, with a chance of rain or flurries. The unsettled pattern is likely to continue through the weekend, with snow possible by Thursday night and flurries returning Saturday.

Long-range forecasts from the Old Farmer’s Almanac appear to support the same trend, predicting cold, unsettled weather through the end of March, followed by a warm-up in mid-April.

The Almanac’s regional outlook for the Prairies shows March temperatures trending 1 C below average, with precipitation above seasonal norms.

Safety experts warn that spring driving comes with its own set of hazards — from changing surface conditions and flooding to potholes, wildlife and increased pedestrian activity.

According to collision data, nearly 30 per cent of Alberta’s fatal crashes occur between April and June — a time marked by unstable weather and shifting road conditions.

Drivers are advised to slow down in wet or slushy conditions, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid cruise control when roads are slick.
