Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a special weather statement for the Airdrie and Crossfield area.

According to ECCC, wintry weather returns to Alberta this week, and you can expect winter travel conditions from Wednesday overnight to Friday across central Alberta.

"Heavy wet snow will begin Wednesday night over parts of west-central Alberta, including for Grande Prairie, Whitecourt and Edson."

Central Alberta, including the Edmonton region, will see increasing amounts of snow on Thursday morning. Red Deer and other locations in central-southern Alberta, south of Edmonton, may get rain mixed with freezing rain before turning to snow on Thursday afternoon.

"Snowfall amounts of 5 to 20 cm of snow is forecast by Friday morning across central Alberta, with higher accumulations of 25 cm possible near the Rocky Mountains and over west-central Alberta near Grande Prairie."

With warm temperatures at the start of the week and uncertainty about the snowfall rate, ECCC is confident that total accumulations will remain moderate.

Environment Canada is calling for daytime highs in Airdrie to be near or just above freezing this week, paired with overnight lows that dip well below zero. Airdrie is forecasted to see rain or snow on Wednesday and Thursday. That freeze-thaw cycle often leads to slushy surfaces by day and icy patches overnight, especially during early-morning commutes.
