Grande Prairie Enforcement Services is reminding residents that any concerns about vehicle for hire passenger safety can be shared with the City of Grande Prairie. The notice follows a traffic stop last month by a Peace Officer who pulled over a taxi that was speeding 101 km/h in a 60 km/h zone while transporting a customer.
“Driving companies provide a valuable service in our community, giving residents a variety of options for transportation, but it’s important those options are safe,” says Peace Officer Sergeant Bransen Balfour. "If you have concerns about a vehicle for hire in our community, please reach out with as much information as possible so they can be addressed.”
Vehicles for Hire, like designated driving, taxi, rideshare, limousine, and shuttle services, are licensed by the City of Grande Prairie and governed by the municipal Vehicle for Hire Bylaw C-1394. Infractions that can be reported to Grande Prairie Enforcement Services include dangerous driving behaviour like speeding and running red lights, as well as not displaying a chauffeur permit and not having proper signage to identify the vehicle as a taxi inside or outside the vehicle. Like all drivers on the road, Vehicles for Hire are also expected to follow the Traffic Safety Act.
