With April here, bringing the promise of warmer weather and outdoor projects, the Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance (SCGA) is reminding residents about the importance of safe digging practices. To mark Dig Safe Month, the SCGA is hosting 23 free breakfasts across the province, including an event in Rosetown on April 30.
These one-hour breakfast sessions, beginning at 7:30 a.m., are designed to educate industry professionals and the public on the risks associated with excavation and the importance of damage prevention. Attendees will receive a complimentary breakfast, watch a 20-minute Dig Safe video, and have the opportunity to network with utility owners and fellow industry professionals.
“Last year, over 2,700 people attended these events, and we hope to surpass that number in 2025,” said Shannon Doka, SCGA Executive Director. “These breakfasts are a great opportunity to bring together anyone who prioritizes safe digging practices and community safety.”
The SCGA warns that uncontrolled excavation is the leading cause of damage to underground infrastructure, which can result in service disruptions, financial penalties, injuries, or even fatalities. In 2023, there were 615 reported incidents in Saskatchewan, an average of 2.5 per workday.
“Thanks to our generous industry sponsors, these breakfasts are completely free to attend,” Doka added. “No one wants to be responsible for disrupting power to a neighbour’s home, a seniors’ centre, or a hospital, but the consequences can go far beyond inconvenience.”
Residents are urged to take simple steps to protect their communities, such as requesting a free utility line locate before digging. “Changes in surface conditions, such as farming activities or extreme weather, can cause utility lines to shift over time,” said Lisa Kosolofski, Director of Sask 1st Call. “If you’re ever unsure whether it’s safe to dig, always take the extra precaution and click before you dig.”

Whether digging for a home project or working on a construction site, following safe excavation practices is crucial to preventing accidents. This Dig Safe Month, the SCGA encourages everyone to come together over breakfast to learn about damage prevention and ensure a safer digging season for all.
