The Grande Prairie Police Service’s newly established Community Standards Unit (CSU) successfully apprehended a man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant following an incident the morning of March 26, 2025.

At approximately 9:15 a.m., GPPS officers on patrol observed a traffic violation involving a taxi in downtown Grande Prairie. Officers initiated a traffic stop and the vehicle continued to drive for a short distance before stopping.

A male passenger then exited the vehicle and fled on foot northbound. The taxi driver reported that the suspect had instructed him to ignore police commands and had assaulted him in the process.

After a brief foot pursuit, CSU officers were able to apprehend the individual. He was subsequently transferred to the RCMP for processing. Upon further investigation, it was confirmed that the man was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for failing to comply with the conditions of his parole. Further charges related to the incident are pending.

The CSU was launched earlier this month to address social disorder in keys areas of the City of Grande Prairie.

"Our officers are dedicated to ensuring that residents and business owners feel safer within our community through a highly visible presence,” says GPPS Superintendent John Respet. “Their swift response in this situation highlights the effectiveness of the CSU and underscores the importance of proactively enhancing public safety.”

The RCMP remains the police of primary jurisdiction for the City of Grande Prairie and the CSU is operating with its support. All calls requiring police attendance will be directed to the RCMP detachment.
