Milton Tweten Obituary

1926 ~ 2025 (age 98)

Milton Ardeen Tweten passed away on March 19, 2025, at the age of 98. He was born to Oscar and Myrtle Tweten, the oldest son and brother to Joyce, Gerald and Inez.  Mel worked from a young age for Burns and then Intercontinental Meat Packing Plant, where his ingenious insight into factory function and his innate ability for blueprint creation was utilized.

Mel met the love of his life and was married to Dorothy Phyllis Cook on January 15, 1949.  They had six children: Karen Leslie Blackett (Bruce), Laura Jean Nagel (Harry Gene), Patricia McDaniel (Dwight), Wendy Blott (Allan), Robert Tweten (Doreen), Bonnie Tweten (Janet Bozak).

Mel and Phyllis owned a small hotel in Herschel, Saskatchewan, which Phyllis operated until 1976. That year, they purchased the Leader Hotel, and Mel began a second career as a hotelier and business owner at the age of 50, which he pursued until his passing.

Mel was well known in Leader and area as an accomplished card player, especially in Cribbage, a prolific reader, and a pilot with many hours of flying under his belt—flying many times to Houston.  He had a great sense of humour and loved nothing more than spending time with his family. He enjoyed trap shooting for many years and also volunteered on the Leader Community Ambulance as a driver/attendant.  After the loss of his wife, Milton travelled to many countries including Italy, France, Spain, England, Scotland, and Mexico. His solo driving trips to Houston to visit Patty at the advanced age of 88+ are notorious.

Milton was predeceased by; his wife Phyllis in 2004, daughter Laurie in 2005, grandson Mitchell Mel Tweten Sept. 19, 2024, as well as sons-in-law, Dwight McDaniel, Harry Gene Nagel, sister Joyce, and brother Gerald.

He is survived by Karen and Bruce Blackett, Patricia McDaniel, Wendy and Allan Blott, Rob and Doreen Tweten, Bonnie Tweten, and Janet Bozak, and long-time friend and employee Glenda Herman.  He is also survived by his grandchildren: Tara and Victor Gatnicki, Amelia Martin, Lee and Janay Martin, Breanne and Aakash Bhatt, Harper McDaniel, Sara and Justin Leray, Taylor Blott, Logan Blott, Jordan and Karla Tweten, Becky Bozak, and many great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service for Milton will be held on Friday, April 11 at 1:00 p.m. at the Leader Community Hall followed by the interment at the Leader Cemetery.
